Our volunteers will be working on the second floor at the Higher Ground facility in St. Paul, near Xcel Energy Center. The facility is scheduled to open in December of 2016.
Friends of Dorothy Day will assume responsibility for 2nd floor, Pay for Stay (PFS), each evening serving a prepared dinner and then befriending those who reside there. We will arrive at 7 p.m., do some quick prep work, serve and clean up dinner. During and following dinner, we will make every effort to share God’s love with those we serve through conversation, cards, movies and friendship.
Residents of PFS pay $7 per day to live there. They have a permanent bunk bed, locker and enjoy dinner every evening. The daily fee is held in an account for each resident as an eventual down payment on their own apartment.
Some of the hidden effects of homelessness are a feeling of isolation and loss of confidence. While a good meal feeds the body, our friendship addresses many of those hidden elements that are essential to getting back into society.
