Have you ever searched the Bible to see what it might have to say about the poor, poverty, the homeless? The Bible references God’s call for us to take care of the poor more than 200 times. This was an Old Testament and New Testament responsibility given to us directly from God. Jesus clearly makes this point in Matthew 25:34-40. The homeless definitely qualify as the poor.
The Importance of this call for the Friends of Dorothy Day
As Catholic Charities answers that call from God. And as Men of the Overflow, we have supported Catholic Charities as hands, feet and warm hearts to many of the homeless in St. Paul. For the last seven years, over 100 volunteers have brought God’s love through the unique companionship opportunity to serve these homeless men by serving them a meal, sleeping overnight and making sure their space was cleaned up in the morning.
So some changes are happening with the opening of the Higher Ground facility in St. Paul. Catholic Charities is challenging our group, now broadened to the Friends of Dorothy Day name, to bring God’s love to the homeless in this new Higher Ground facility.
Although most volunteers come from Catholic parishes around the Twin Cities, other organizations or businesses are welcome to serve. If you know of any such organization, and would like someone to contact them, please Contact Us.
So this is an urgent call to you to raise your hand to engage in this great opportunity to share the love of Christ in a very real way! Go here for the volunteer sign-up portal.
